Australia is moving quickly to position itself for the next phase of artificial intelligence. The recent partnership between the Australian Government and Anthropic, alongside broader investment in AI safety, research and workforce capability, signals a clear shift from experimentation to something far more deliberate. AI is no longer a fringe discussion and is now embedded in national economic strategy.

And yet, inside many government agencies and private sector organisations, the way AI is being applied tells a different story.

Across government and enterprise, most activity is still centred on productivity tools, including copilots, assistants and summarisation engines that make individual tasks faster or easier. These tools are useful and, in many cases, necessary. They provide quick wins, build familiarity and help organisations get comfortable with the technology.

But they rarely change how work is fundamentally done.
