Mapping a sustainable technology future for the Department of Health and Aged Care

The Australian Department of Health and Aged Care (ADHA) oversees and coordinates national health policies and programs, ensuring the delivery of quality healthcare and aged care services to Australians. When its Chief Technology Officer sought to drive ICT operational transformation, xAmplify was brought in to develop a comprehensive three-year technology roadmap.

This roadmap was crucial for aligning the CTO’s department with a single, clear vision, while addressing the need for culture change and demonstrating tangible business value to stakeholders. Our approach combined tactical priorities with long-term strategic goals, incorporating emerging technologies and Whole-of-Government initiatives. By focusing on both immediate needs and future objectives, we ensured a roadmap that not only guided current actions but also set a visionary path for sustained success.

From Discovery to Sustainable Delivery

xAmplify was asked to tackle several key tasks for the department’s ICT functions – defining strategic themes and principles that would guide the department from discovery to delivery.

  • First, we needed to identify and understand the technology limitations, gather feedback, and work together to propose actionable recommendations. We began by fostering a collaborative environment and securing endorsement for our approach by engaging with key stakeholders. The discovery phase focused on defining strategic themes, setting roadmap objectives, and assessing the current state. Through our stakeholder interactions, we identified risks, challenges, and needs, which helped us build a backlog of activities.
  • We also conducted a thorough analysis of the current state to pinpoint areas for tactical and operational improvements while highlighting strategic initiatives for the short, medium, and long term. Our iterative recommendations covered several key areas, including digital workspace, business and corporate applications, data and analytics, platform services, security, and DevOps.
  • Finally, we created engaging, visual strategy and roadmap artifacts, including interactive infographics and detailed documentation, to clearly communicate the department’s technology journey. We emphasised sustainability throughout, recommending strategies to consolidate platforms, reduce costs, and simplify operations to minimize cognitive load and streamline the technology landscape.

A Clear Path Forward

xAmplify made sure the Department was set up for long-term success by creating a three-year technology roadmap that aligned with their shared vision. We resolved deployment risks and detailed the value of each initiative, offering clear recommendations to streamline and transform their ICT function. Our infographics and documentation made it easy for ICT teams and other departments to understand and engage with the technology changes.

We also ensured that the enterprise modeling and requirements were in a format the Department’s architecture team could sustain easily. The Chief Information Officer officially backed the roadmap, and the ICT Division now uses it as their go-to guide for making strategic infrastructure and technology decisions.

“The team demonstrated exceptional technical proficiency across multiple domains and took a collaborative approach that fostered a productive working relationship with the Department. They delivered a pragmatic, future-focused but achievable roadmap that was instrumental in transforming our IT landscape.”
