Technology Roadmap

Project Background

xAmplify Services was engaged to assist and support the Office of the Chief Technology Officer: IT Division - Department of Health in developing a 3-year technology roadmap to enable ICT operational technology.

The engagement was highly consultative and focused on accounting tactical perspectives on immediate priorities to reflect a longer-term strategic view of business drivers and external influences, such as emerging technology and Whole-of-Government initiatives.

The engagement established strategic themes and principles to ensure traceability from the problem space through to technical recommendations and transition plans, including a set of rich, appropriately detailed infographics to provide a ubiquitous medium to communicate the future of technology.

Scope of Service

Our team was engaged to identify technology capability limitations within the IT Division, understand the problem space, channel feedback and participation, and collaboratively propose a series of recommendations across defined planning horizons, to deliver:

• Strategic themes and principles definitions to sustain the stakeholder’s journey from discovery to delivery.
• Current state analysis to support opportunities for tactical and operational improvements, whilst highlighting strategic initiatives, in the short, medium, and long term.
• Visualised strategy and roadmap artefacts as interactive infographics to enable communication on the technology journey of the Department.
• Provision of supporting documentation to support visualised artefacts for decision making.

The Approach

The delivery approach commenced by setting the collaborative environment and endorsed the proposed approach. The discovery phase comprised eliciting strategic themes and principles, roadmap objectives and outcomes, and current state definition. Collaboration with Branches’ representatives through facilitated workshops drew out risks, challenges, concerns, needs, and allowed the team to build a backlog of activities to formulate recommendations on technology and business facing domains. Recommendations were grouped into the following domains:

• Digital Workspace.
• Business and Corporate Applications.
• Data and Analytics.
• Platform Services.
• Security.
• DevOps and Enterprise Service Management.

Resulting recommendations presented iteratively included the orchestration of technology, transformation strategies and tactics.

Outcome

xAmplify Services delivered on all the projected outcomes, as summarised below:

• Endorsement and acceptance of the 3-year Technology Roadmap to sustain the Division’s shared vision, including a representation of deployment risks and enterprise value per initiative.
• The set of recommendations per specific domain postulated to harmonise, orchestrate, consolidate and/or transform the current state in support of defined objectives and expected outcomes.
• Detailed infographics to facilitate communication amongst the Division and serve as the common vehicle for engaging audiences in understanding the transformation journey.
• Supporting documentation consolidating the voice of Stakeholders during the discovery phase.
